WELCOME TO THE STREETSBORO CITIZENS POLICE ACADEMY

 

What is the Citizen Police Academy?

The City of Streetsboro Police Department has found that education is most effective in gaining understanding and support from the community. The Citizen Police Academy offers our citizens insights into how police officers perform their duties and how the department serves the community.

 

Mission of the Academy

The purpose of the Citizen Police Academy is to foster better communication between citizens and police through education. The Academy will create a nucleus of well-informed citizens who possess greater insight into police practices and services.  Graduates of the academy can share their knowledge and experiences with the community as the opportunity arises. Everyone benefits from enhanced citizen understanding of the role and function of their police department.

 

Course Description 

Instruction consists of one 3-hour class held each week for a duration of eight (8) weeks.  This instruction is comprehensive, covering a different area of the Police Department each week. Certified police officers, supervisors, and civilian instructors with particular expertise will conduct each topic. Classes are limited to 25 citizen attendees.  Attendance at the Academy is free.

 

Course Cirriculum

The course outline is subject to adjustment as required.  Topic areas of instruction may include among the following:

  • Criminal Law
  • Search & Seizure
  • Patrol Operations and Communications
  • Traffic Accident Investigation and Reconstruction
  • Internet and computer crime
  • Tactical traffic stops
  • Firearms and Simunition demonstration
  • Investigation of DUI
  • Defensive tactics and less lethal force options
  • Community and county services
  • Tour of county detention center
  • Traffic Radar & Laser Enforcement
  • DARE / School Resource Officer Program

 

A vital part of the Academy is participation in role playing and scenarios. These simulations will provide an opportunity for a unique "hands-on" learning experience. Students will also have the option, on a voluntary basis, to ride along with a patrol officer.

 

Who may attend the Academy?

  • Any interested citizen who resides within the City of Streetsboro is encouraged to attend. Citizens involved with the Streetsboro community in some way, such as youth involvement, neighborhood watch, and other community groups and organizations are very important to the Academy.
  • Citizens 18 years of age or older.
  • Citizens with no prior felony convictions and no misdemeanor offenses of violence.  

 

When is the Academy?

The Academy is tentatively scheduled to start in Spring 2008.  A downloadable Citizen Police Acdemy Application form will be posted here when application begins.
